The AAD and The France Foundation Awarded the 2013 Great Idea Award.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — JANUARY 31, 2013 — During the 2013 Alliance for Continuing Education in the Health Professions Annual Conference, The France Foundation and the American Academy of Dermatology received the 2013 Medical Specialty Societies Member Section Great Idea Award for their work developing The ABCs of Accredited CME. This initiative consists of an online series of educational modules designed for continuing medical education (CME) planners and faculty. The Great Idea Awards are presented by the Alliance in recognition for an outstanding contribution to the field of continuing education in a designated member section.

About The ABCs of Accredited CME
Accredited CME plays an important role not only in assisting physicians in maintenance of licensure but with maintenance of certification as well. In 2004 the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) issued the updated Standards for Commercial Support of CME and in 2006 released the Updated Accreditation Criteria. During the past several years, physicians involved in the planning and implementation of accredited CME have expressed frustration regarding "all the ACCME rules."

The American Academy of Dermatology and The France Foundation, both ACCME-accredited providers, developed this online educational activity – The ABCs of Accredited CME – to clarify the intent of the "rules" is that accredited CME is required to be based on the principles of adult learning and be developed, implemented, and evaluated independent of industry influence.

The modules in this Internet enduring initiative:

  • Who Are the Players in CME, Maintenance of Certification, and Maintenance of Licensure
  • Backwards Planning for Continuing Medical Education: Start with the END in Mind
  • Integration of the ABMS Core Competencies into CME Activities
  • Designing CME to Change Competence, Performance and Patient Outcomes
  • Independent, Fair Balanced CME
  • The CME Educational Format: What Works and What Doesn’t
  • Performance Improvement CME and Its Potential Impact on Patient Care
  • HIPAA and Continuing Medical Education
  • Addressing Patient Safety in Continuing Medical Education
  • PowerPoint 101: Creating Effective Educational Materials

Special recognition for the creation of this activity goes to Debra Gist, MPH; Robert Kirsner, MD, PhD; Christine Presta; Ted Bruno, MD; Jennifer Green; Erik Stratman, MD; Ilona Frieden, MD; and Christopher Spock, MD.
